Professional and Practicum Experience
1992-Present Consulting Psychologist and Psychotherapist, Palo Alto, CA.
Provide psychodiagnostic and clinical evaluation of clients and their psychosocial history and records; and consultation and expert testimony with particular expertise in trauma, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Chemical Dependency within an interpersonal neurobiology developmental framework. Provide individual, couple, and family psychotherapy from a relational perspective utilizing dynamic, interpersonal neurobiology, cognitive behavioral, and systemic interventions.

1997-Division Chief, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program/Program Director Chemical Dependency Rehabilitation Program, Department of Psychiatry, The Permanente Medical Group, Santa Clara, California.
Responsible for administration and management of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse division including day treatment and outpatient programs. Supervised and evaluated multidisciplinary staff of mental health and non-physician medical care providers and interns and post-doctoral fellows; participated in departmental management, and in medical center and regional administration and program development and training; provided individual, group and couples/family psychotherapy; served as liaison to local hospitals, community programs and employer groups; provide on-call services to the psychiatry department and medical center.

Specialized Treatment Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorders

(9/87-2/88). Voluntary impatient program for individuals with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Primary diagnoses also included personality, mood, and substance abuse disorders. Conducted individual, group, and couples psychotherapy; completed psychodiagnostic assessments; led psychoeducational groups in a cognitive-behavioral format; and co-developed and implemented relapse prevention program for patients with dual diagnoses of PTSD and Alcohol Abuse Disorders.

1987-Psychological Consultant,, Adolescent Pediatric Clinic, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. Evaluated pediatric patients with psychodiagnostic interviews; provided consultation to physician; and completed short term counseling with patients.

1987-Therapist and Clinical Interviewer, Michigan State University Prevention of Conduct Disorders Project, Departments of Psychology and Pediatrics, Michigan State Universtiy, East Lansing, Michigan. Conducted parent training and family therapy with alcoholic, conduct disordered families; carried out pre- and post-treatment assessments of additional at-risk families participating in longitudinal study of the effects of this social-learning based intervention. Trained beginning therapists in intervention techniques.

Completed family, child and adult assessments including screenings for Attention Deficit with hyperactivity (ADHD) with children, individual psychoeducational assessments, psychosocial assessments of families, and court ordered evaluations of families for abuse/neglect and termination of parental rights cases. Provided family, couple, individual adult, and child play therapy using systemic, dynamic and behavioral paradigms; and co-led parent training group for parents of children diagnosed as ADHD in a cognitive behavioral format.

1984-Consultant, Mason Public Schools, Mason, Michigan. Designed social skills training manual based on cognitive behavioral and social learning theory models; consulted with school social worker and special education teacher to implement the program in learning disabled/emotional impaired classroom.

1985- (May) Consultant/Crisis Worker, Community Meeting Hall, Clinton County, Michigan.
Facilitated crisis intervention groups for members of a boy scout troop who had been sexually abused by leaders and other group members.

1985-Clinician, Ingham County Community Mental Health Sexual Abuse Project, Lansing, Michigan. Co-led group for sexually abused young boys ages six through fifteen; prepared group members and their families for court hearings; and participated in educational planning committees and Community Mental Health staffing for individual cases.

1983-Parent Hotline Worker, Department of Psychology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. Provided information to parents via telephone service about child development and parenting; made referrals; and provided behaviorally based interventions for child behavior problems.

VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

1974-1981 Applied volunteer positions have included: Class Aide with severely emotionally disturbed children; Peer Counselor and Advisor at both a high school and collegiate level; Assistant Case Worker with ten-member Mexican family; and Clinical Interviewer with inmates diagnosed with psychotic spectrum disorders incarcerated in the California corrections system.

Completed dissertation research on the potential moderating and mediating effects of children’s social support on their adjustment to marital distress and separation. Developed semi-structured interview and children’s stress measure; trained undergraduate research staff in interviewing skills and test administration; interviewed parents and children; and analyzed data.

Carried out masters thesis research on the characteristics of elementary school children’s social support networks and the relationship of these support systems to self-competence, peer sociometric status, and community participation.
